Sophie

Sophie moved to York in 2016 to start studying Drama: Education and community studies at York St John University. Throughout this degree, Sophie had opportunities to visit numerous social contexts to devise workshops and creative sessions with the participants. Whilst at university, Sophie spent a summer in Africa building a playground at a school in Uganda. Part of this trip also involved training the local teachers in creative play and learning. We got to know and work with small groups of children and create suitable activities for them. After this and following a successful placement in a primary school, Sophie realised the rewarding nature of working with young people and so started a PGCE in primary teaching.
Over the past 2 years, Sophie has taught year 1 full time in a local primary school. Alongside teaching, she works as a tutor/ chaperone for children in the theatre and entertainment industry. Within these jobs, Sophie has tutored children ranging from ages 5-13.
Sophie absolutely loves working in small groups and on a 1:1 basis with children. She is passionate about finding creative ways to help them learn in a fun and engaging way that is suited to each child’s individual learning style.
